    What is a hybrid bike?

A hybrid bike is the all-rounder among bicycles, suitable for everyday use as well as for longer bike tours. It combines durability with speed and has a focus on comfort on long rides.

    Areas of use:

    • Everyday life: Hybrid bikes are reliable companions for everyday rides such as shopping or running errands.
    • Commuting: They offer a comfortable and efficient way of commuting, especially on routes with different road surfaces.
    • Bike travels: Their ability to carry luggage makes them an excellent choice for multi-day bike tours.
    • Touring:They are equipped with everything you need for longer rides, including mudguards and lights to ensure comfort and safety.

At ROSE you will find the Black Lava and the Black Lava TR. These two hybrid bikes differ in terms of their equipment and their intended use. More information about the Black Lava.

Black Lava – where everyday life takes you

    1. Stylish design: It has an elegant and modern look, characterised by its matt finish and integrated cable routing.
    2. Comfortable ride: With wider tyres and a carbon seat post, it offers a comfortable riding experience.
    3. Nimble and athletic: The stiff carbon fork ensures agile and safe handling of the bike.

Black Lava TR – riding comfort in everyday life and beyond

    1. Comfort: The suspension fork and suspension seat post ensure a particularly comfortable ride.
    2. Superior shifting system: SHIMANO’s Cues shifting system promises easy operation and reliable riding behaviour.
    3. Load capacity: The luggage rack can carry up to 25 kg, which is ideal for everyday use and touring.
    4. Integrated cables: The fully integrated cables ensure an elegant design and a clean look.

What are the most important features of a hybrid bike?

Frame geometry and riding position: Hybrid bikes typically have a more upright and comfortable riding position compared to urban bikes. The frame geometry allows for a relaxed posture, making it suitable for longer rides and different types of terrain.

Shifting system – derailleur vs. hub gears: Hybrid bikes can either have derailleur gears or hub gears. Derailleur gears offer a wide gear range and are very efficient in terms of speed. Hub gears are built into the rear hub. They are low-maintenance and offer a clean look.

Lighting systems and dynamo: THybrid bikes are often equipped with dynamo-powered lighting. When in motion, the dynamo generates electricity that powers the headlight and rear light. This ensures visibility and safety on night rides, without having to rely on batteries.

Mudguards and luggage racks: Hybrid bikes have mudguards to protect the rider from road splash and dirt. They also have rear racks for attaching panniers or bags, making them suitable for commuting and touring.

Ergonomic components – saddle, handlebar, pedals: Hybrid bikes have a focus on comfort. The saddle is wider and padded for long rides. The handlebar is often ergonomic or adjustable, which enables a relaxed grip position. The pedals can have a larger surface for better support.

Which frame materials are available for hybrid bikes?

Hybrid bikes are usually equipped with an aluminium frame. This material has its own advantages and disadvantages that need to be taken into account.

    Aluminium:
    • Advantages:
      • Inexpensive: They are affordable and offer good value for money.
      • Durability: Aluminium frames are very robust.
      • Recycling: Aluminium is a material that is easy to recycle.
    • Disadvantages:
      • Comfort: They can be less comfortable on rough paths.
      • Weight: They tend to be a little heavier, which can affect handling.
      • Fatigue: Aluminium can fatigue over time, which affects the service life.

Aluminium is durable and inexpensive. At ROSE you will find the Black Lava and the Black Lava TR with aluminium frame.

Which shifting systems are available for hybrid bikes?

There are two main types of drive systems for hybrid bikes: derailleur gears and hub gears with a belt or chain drive. Both systems have their own specific properties that make them suitable for different areas of use.

    Derailleur gears:
Derailleur gears are the classic shifting system found on most bicycles.

    • Advantages:
      • Versatility: A wide range of gears makes them ideal for different types of terrain, from flat roads to steep climbs.
      • Efficiency: They provide direct power transfer, resulting in an efficient ride.
      • Maintenance: Spare parts are readily available and maintenance can often be carried out by the user.

    • Disadvantages:
      • High-maintenance: The chain has to be cleaned and lubricated regularly.
      • Wear: Drive components can wear out and may need to be replaced.

    Hub gears with belt drive:
Hub gears can either be used with a chain or belt drive. The belt drive uses a more durable toothed belt instead of a chain.

    • Advantages:
      • Low-maintenance: Belt drives require less maintenance as they do not need to be lubricated and are less susceptible to dirt.
      • Durability: Belts generally last longer than chains and need to be replaced less often.
      • Silent: A belt drive is more silent than a chain drive.

    • Disadvantages:
      • Costs: Belt drives can be more expensive to purchase.

With regard to the intended use, derailleur gears are particularly suitable for riders who need a wide gear range and who are prepared to take on the maintenance. They are ideal for athletic tours and regions with varying terrain. Hub gears with a belt drive, on the other hand, are perfect for commuters and everyday riders who are looking for a low-maintenance and reliable bike.
